PapayaDid you know that papaya, also known as Carica Papaya, is considered one of the important fruit crops in the Philippines? It is rich in antioxidants vitamins A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. It is also high in iron, calcium, protein, carbohydrate, and phosphorous. The enzyme papain which is obtained from the latex and found in unripe papaya, is used to tenderize meat, make beer, soften woolens, make toothpaste, and nowadays the main ingredient in many whitening products like soap and lotion. The leaves when properly flavored can also be used to make cigarettes. The ripe fruit is eaten as a breakfast fruit or added to fruit salads. Even though papaya has many health benefits, eating too much may cause side effects, too.

Papaya's high fiber content may reduce the risk of heart disease. High-fiber diets lower cholesterol levels. Eating papaya may also reduce your chance of developing a diabetes, and cancer. It can also help in digestion, lowers blood sugar and blood pressure, and speeds up wound healing. Even though papaya has many health benefits, a few side effects may occur in some people. The papaya contains a high amount of chemicals like latex, which is found in high quantities in the unripe papaya fruit. The latex in papaya may cause uterine contractions and early labor when taken during pregnancy. There is also some evidence that unprocessed papain found in unripe papaya fruit, might poison the fetus or cause birth defects.

Papaya may cause severe allergic reactions and is, therefore, contraindicated in sensitive people. People with latex allergies may experience symptoms such as hives, stuffy nose, wheezing, and chest tightness. Eating papaya in cases of severe latex sensitivity might result in anaphylaxis or severe breathing difficulty. Additionally, the enzyme papain found in papaya may affect the reproductive health. Large amounts can suppress progesterone and long-term consumption may lower sperm counts and result in infertility. Papaya is also a good source of fiber and is beneficial for digestive health. However, consuming an excessive amount could have a laxative effect, causing an upset stomach and diarrhea. In addition to the good benefits mentioned above, papaya may help protect you against the visible signs of aging. Add this healthy and delicious fruit to your regular diet for a smooth and youthful skin!
