The Disaster Preparedness Committee of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Northern Mindanao in a meeting convened on June 28 discussed the impending threat of La Nina and came up with a Regional La Nina Action Plan.
This is in response to DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2016-74 issued on May 31, 2016 on the possibility of La Nina during the second half of 2016 as warned by PAG-ASA. According to PAG-ASA, effects of La Nina include early rainy season, strong monsoon activity, more tropical cyclones and above normal rainfall. Eight to 14 cyclones may develop or enter the country from June– November 2016.
The Circular specifically advised DRRMC at all levels to take precautionary measures in their respective areas of responsibilities and ensure close coordination with PAG-ASA and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau for timely weather updates and threats of flooding and rainfall-induced landslides, respectively.
To ensure close monitoring of La Nina related incidents, a status report will be regularly submitted to the DILG through its Regional Offices.
The National Nutrition Council X as a regular member of the NorMin RDRRMC attended the meeting and submitted a La Nina Action Plan as Cluster Coordinator of the Regional Nutrition Cluster. mdmn
