15 September 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) of Barangay Kauswagan, this city, conducted the first session of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon for pregnant and lactating women. The activity was attended by twelve (12) participants from Zones 1 to 4 and was held at the Lupon Hall. The activity was spearheaded by the Punong Barangay Engr. Pedro D. Balite, PhD, Kagawad Artagnan Pimentel, Kagawad Peter Jason Balite, Ms. Angelique Jean Maggay, Nutrition Officer I (NO I) from the City Nutrition Office, Ms. Juanicita Budiongan, the Barangay Nutrition Action Officer (BNAO), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and assisted by Central Mindanao University (CMU) On-the-Job Trainees (OJTs).
Ms. Stephanie Pepito, a CMU intern, hosted the event. Kagawad Balite delivered his Opening Remarks for the first day of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon. The activity began with a pre-test for the attendees administered by the BNSs. All the topics discussed were facilitated by the CMU OJTs. The first topic tackled was the 10 Kumainments delivered by Ms. Lhalene Flores and Ms. Ailean Faith S. Hotohot. This was followed by a lecture on proper hand-washing, explained and demonstrated by Ms. Joyce Vanessa E. Navaja. The attendees also participated by altogether demonstrating the proper handwashing technique. Ms. Trisha Mae M. Magallanes elaborated the Pinggang Pinoy, followed by the overview of the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon pamphlet given by Ms. Junice M. Espinosa. The last topic tackled for day one was the first chapter of the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, explained by Mr. Vince Arcayera. To sustain the mothers’ participation, the speakers conducted mini-games all throughout the activity.
The Pabasa sa Nutrisyon continued for two days, 15-16 September, 2022, and was facilitated still by CMU OJTs of the City Health Office (CHO). Culminating the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon was the graduation program, to recognize the twelve (12) Pabasa graduates.
The activity aims to teach pregnant and lactating women in the barangay about proper nutrition and hygiene practices to reduce the prevalence of low birth weight and prevent the various forms of malnutrition. The Pabasa sa Nutrisyon is a peer-to-peer education program that is a crucial component of every nutrition program because it shapes long-term and habitual behavior, resulting to better nutrition situation among target groups.
