8 November 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – Select Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) X members, stakeholders, and partners convened to begin the series of planning activities for the 2023-2028 Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) last 19-20 October 2022 at The VIP Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
The two-day workshop was attended by 14 participants composed of various agencies including non-government organizations (NGOs) which was facilitated by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae Fernandez and NNC X technical staff - Nutrition Officer III Sheena Marie Talle, Development Management Officers II Arlie Joy Damiles, Gwyn Balaba, and Lizelle Bete, and Project Development Officer I Vazamija Therese Villasi.
The development of the 2023-2028 RPAN aims to scale-up nutrition interventions by aligning various stakeholders and partners’ programs, projects, and activities (PPAs) adopting the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023-2028 identified priority strategies. PPAN 2023-2028 is the country’s framework in addressing malnutrition problem.
The highlights of the activity were the presentation and discussion of the following: (1) Assessment of the 2017-2022 RPAN performance; (2) Regional Nutrition Situation; (3) Accomplishments of the RNC members; (4) PPAN goals and targets for the next six years; (5) Regional Goals and Target setting; (6) Formulation of strategies and interventions to address hunger and malnutrition; (7) Investment planning, Implementation arrangements; and (8) Monitoring and evaluation.
During the workshop, participants identified their nutrition and related PPAs across the life stages that will contribute to the RPAN. Likewise, activities of the Philippine Multisectoral Nutrition Project (PMNP) will also be included in the plan.
Malnutrition still exists even in Region 10. To address the vicious cycle of malnutrition, NPC Fernandez said, “Malnutrition is a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional problem that needs multi-sectoral interventions or approaches. The problem of malnutrition is not the responsibility of the NNC nor the generosity of a single sector’s spoon. The solution requires a collaborative effort or contribution from several spoons.” She emphasized that the contribution of all sectors is very significant in improving the nutrition situation of Region 10.
After the workshop, the participants agreed to following next steps presented: respective agencies to consult their technical divisions and supervisors, and check their existing strategic plans to ensure the completeness of the listed PPAs for the RPAN. Draft RPAN will be presented to the Regional Nutrition Committee in November 2022 for comments and adoption.
With the identified priority interventions, NNC X intends to contribute to the achievement of a positive nutrition situation in the country by ensuring that Northern Mindanao gets Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat!
