30 April 2015, Koronadal City - Presidential Decree No. 1569 “Strengthening The Barangay Nutrition Program By Providing For A Barangay Nutrition Scholar In Every Barangay, Providing Funds Therefore And For Other Purposes“. Thirty Seven (37) years ago, the Government focused its development program on country side development most especially on the implementation of the quality of life in every barangay in the country and a part of it was alleviate malnutrition cases in the country. Therefore, Barangay Nutrition Scholar was born. Section 2 of the PD 1569 states that the barangay nutrition scholar shall be a barangay based volunteer worker responsible for delivering nutrition services and other related activities such as community health, backyard food production, environmental sanitation, culture, mental feeding, and family planning to the barangay.
The National Nutrition Council Region 12 together with the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) conducted its first wave of evaluation among BNSs in the Region for this year. The evaluation started on April 8, 2015 and will end on June 3, 2015. RNET is looking forward for a BNS who have shown an exemplary performance, accomplishments and contributions to nutrition program implementation in their barangays by simply performing their basic task such as caring for the malnourished, mobilizing the community, linkage-building, informing the community on scheduled immunization, organizing mothers’ class or community nutrition education, providing nutrition counseling services especially on exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding through home visits, promotion of home or community food gardens, and formulation of their Barangay Nutrition Action Plan.
