Tobacco is a product prepared from the leaves of the tobacco plant by curing them. It contains the alkaloid nicotine, which is a stimulant, and harmala alkaloids, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Dried tobacco leaves are mainly used for smoking in cigarettes, cigars, or pipe tobacco.
Tobacco or E-cigarettes use is so widespread that it increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Smoking comes with a devastating side effects to one’s health due to the inhalation of poisonous chemicals such as carbon monoxide, cyanide and carcinogens which have been proven to plaque build-up that will ultimately cause heart and lung diseases and even cancer.
The World Health Organization (WHO) marks May 31, every year, the World No Tobacco Day. This year’s campaign focused on “Tobacco and heart disease”. This advocacy will create awareness on the impact tobacco has on the cardiovascular health of people worldwide hence tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death and suffering of millions of people globally.
Our Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on 16 of May 2017 issued Executive Order No. 26, entitled “Providing for the Establishment of Smoke-Free Environments in Public and Enclosed Places”. This law primarily aims to impose a nationwide ban on smoking in public places nationwide. Smoking is no longer allowed except in designated smoking areas that follow guidelines set by law. The order reinforces the Republic Act (RA) No. 9211, which prohibits the purchase and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to and by minors and in certain places frequented by virus and also invoked the Clean Air Act of 1999. The law coincides with a range of global initiatives that aimed at addressing the tobacco epidemic and its impact of public health.
Further, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) has formulated tools that serve as a guide for a healthy well-being of all Filipinos. We have our Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos which have the 10 key nutrition messages to healthy living for all age groups. The ninth and tenth message reminds us to be physically active and do not smoke to help prevent lifestyle-related non-communicable disease. We can also refer to our Pinggang Pinoy model which conveys the right food group proportions on a per-meal basis to meet the body’s energy and nutrient needs.
Avoidance and refraining from smoking will provide you a lot of health benefits. Further, you’re not only saving yourself from developing lung complications but also making the people around you healthy as well. (NO I Laurito/NO III Flores)
