Goiter Awareness WeekPeople who lack of the mineral iodine may result in a wide range of conditions or abnormalities which includes goiter, cretinism, hypothyroidism, mental deficiency and or reproductive failures. Iodine deficiency is an important public health issue as it is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation and impaired psychomotor function among young children. It is also the preventable cause of the common disease among Filipinos which is goiter. Hence, Presidential Proclamation 1188 signed on December 11, 2006 declares every 4th week of January of every year as Goiter Awareness Week.

Goiter is the swelling in the neck resulting from an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland due to iodine deficiency. With this year’s theme “Goiter Sugpuin, Isip Patalinuhin, Iodized Salt Gamitin,” the Department of Health, in coordination with partner stakeholders, takes the lead in the dissemination of information and educating the public on the effects of goiter and other iodine deficiency disorders most importantly on pregnant women that may lead to low birth weight and premature delivery.

Thus, to prevent goiter and other iodine deficiency disorders, people are advised to use iodized salt which was stated in the seventh message in the 10 Kumainments of the National Nutrition Council. It is as well of great importance to consume right amounts of iodine rich foods such as seafood (seaweed and seashell) and dairy products (milk, yogurt and cheese), eggs, meats, most fruits and vegetables, gluten-free grains and non-caffeinated beverages.
In observance of the nationwide campaign, the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force 12 conducted series of salt monitoring and salt testing region wide to closely monitor the aadequacy of iodine levels of salt in the establishments, school canteens, public markets and salt used by the consumers.

To intensify the advocacy, NNC XII through its Regional Media group and information arm, had reinforced the general public by airing salt iodization-related plugs, emphasizing its importance and health effects.

Hence, a widespread information dissemination and educational efforts can make a huge impact in the management and control of thyroid disorders and some of the health threats that may be hovering in the region. (RALaurito/DPAurel/AMFlores/AML)
