Feb CA awareness

Cancer also called as malignant tumors or neoplasms, a common term for a large group of diseases that can cause distress to any organ or tissue of the body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably. According to World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the Philippines responsible for around 141,021 cases and 86,337 deaths in 2018. Breast and lung cancer are the most common cases that are high in incidence and mortality, respectively.

The Philippine government is constantly working to improve the health and medical development access of people with cancer. The Department of Health (DOH) in collaboration with LGUs and cancer focused professional societies and academic institutions lead the observance of National Cancer Awareness Month every February of every year as approved by RA 11215 or the National Integrated Cancer Control Act which is responsible on establishing a national framework for all cancer-related activities. The campaign aims to inform every Filipino on cancer literacy, understand the risk factors associated with the disease and reduce fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and uncertainty felt by people with cancer.

Furthermore, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) supports the campaign by continuously reminding every Filipino to follow the 10 Kumainments, specifically Kumainment No. 3 “Kumain ng gulay at prutas araw-araw”, Kumainment No. 9 “Panatilihin ang tamang timbang” and Kumainment No. 10 “Maging aktibo. Iwasan ang alak; huwag manigarilyo”.

Health experts also suggested various tips to consider helping lower your cancer risk. It is important to protect yourself from the sun by avoiding the midday sun and stay in the shade. Another effective cancer prevention tip is to have  regular self-exams and screenings for various types of cancers to help increase your chances of discovering cancer early.

Cancer not just affects your physical health, it can also bring up a wide range of feelings and emotions you’re not used to. It is important to identify and learn some ways to cope with it. One should take some mental break, do activities that helps you unwind, meditate, and take some relaxation exercise. Patients also must learn to stay positive and healthy as possible even in trying times. Patients can still live their life, have hopes and enjoy the usual things following the right treatment and a good support system. Together we can beat cancer. (NO I Laurito/NO III Flores)
