The digestive system is a group of organs that work together to convert the food you eat into the energy and nutrients your body needs. But there are times, one or more parts of the digestive system will not function well and can cause minor distress to severe health problems.

In the Philippines, among the leading causes of deaths are related to the digestive tract, which includes among others, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, peptic ulcer disease, diarrhea and stomach cancer.

Last March 18, 2020, Proclamation No. 930 was signed declaring the second week of March of every year as Philippine Digestive Health Week. The campaign aims to promote awareness and educate the public for the prevention and management of various diseases and conditions relating to digestive health.

The declaration also directed all other agencies and private sectors to actively participate and provide the necessary support to successfully conduct all other related activities in observance of the celebration.

It is imperative to keep your digestive system healthy to avoid digestive complications. Health and nutrition experts recommends to eat a high fiber diet such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes, limit also high fatty foods intake, include probiotics and prebiotics in your diet, drink plenty of water, avoid smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages and excessive caffeine, exercise regularly and manage stress to keep food moving through the digestive tract, reduce constipation and prevent or treat various digestive conditions.

Moreover, National Nutrition Council XII continuously reminding the public to follow the 10 Kumainments which encourage positive nutrition practices and promote the adoption of healthy lifestyle and include also the Pinggang Pinoy that shows the recommended proportion by food groups in every meal.

Incorporating these healthy tips can help improve your digestive system to function more efficiently and improve your overall health and sense of well-being. Remember that the foods you eat and the lifestyle you live have a direct impact on your digestive health. (NO I Laurito/OICNPC Flores)
