MARCH PROJECT ANAK

Project ANAK or “Accelerated Nutrient Advocacy for Kids” is a model delivery system for complementary feeding intervention aimed to improve the malnutrition problem among children six months to two years old.

In Sultan Kudarat Province, the municipalities of Columbio, Esperanza, Lambayong, Kalamansig, President Quirino and Senator Ninoy Aquino adopted and implemented the DOST-FNRI Project ANAK that focus on providing feeding intervention for 120 days with priority to those who are underweight, stunted and wasted 6-24 months children using the complementary food produced by DOST-FNRI Complementary Food Production Center established in SKSU, Isulan Campus, Sultan Kudarat. The six municipalities also targeted 24-35 months old malnourished children.

Complementary foods, “BIG MO” Rice-Mongo Instant Blends prepared by adding 2/3 cup boiled water is given to 6-11 months while ready-to-eat “BIG MO” Rice-Mongo Curls is given for 12 months and above. Both complementary foods are rich in protein and energy and processed by extrusion cooking.

Furthermore, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) and Human Resources for Health-Nutritionist Dietitians (HRH-NDs) conducts nutrition education for the mothers and caregivers using the developed DOST-FNRI PINOY module.

The feeding program is part of the First 1000 days health program for children that covers from conception up to childbirth to ensure mother healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, exclusive breastfeeding is given to infants and complementary feeding is initiated while continuing breastfeeding.

PLGU-SK funded the said project since 2019 and ensure its continuous implementation. (NOI Laurito/OIC-NPC Flores)
