As April comes in, so as the most awaited summer vacations. Although the hot dry season starts during the month of March up until the month of May, Filipinos traditionally schedule trips on the beach and engage in outdoor activities more when the month of April starts. With these changes in season and usual activities, there are some tips to maintain health and beat the summer heat.
The first thing to consider and should be of much consideration when booking a vacation trip is the risk of being infected by COVID-19 virus. As we are in the midst of the pandemic, it is discouraged to go out for leisure and unessential activities. If that vacation can’t be delayed any longer, be sure to practice safety protocols during your booked trip. Avoid crowded places and observe social distancing. Wear face masks, bring extra when staying overnight and make use of face shield when necessary. Always wash and sanitize your hands, most importantly before eating and as much as possible, avoid sharing food especially when people are not in the same household.
With the summer sun over us, being hydrated is extremely necessary. It is best to rehydrate by drinking water and other rehydration drinks with low amounts of sugar to replenish your electrolytes. Avoid sugary drinks as too much of them cause health problems including diabetes, weight gain, and rotten teeth. As emphasized in Kumainment #8 in the 10 Kumainments, we should limit our intake of sugary foods as well as those that are salty and oily. Opt for water-rich fruits instead such as watermelon, pineapple, oranges, apple and cantaloupe. Better yet, drink coconut water as a refreshing sweet drink full of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes.
Physical activity is also important, even when the hot season makes you sweat more. Being active is beneficial as stated in Kumainment #10. According to PNGPA, it is advised for adults aged 21-45yrs old to accumulate 30 to 60 minutes of daily physical activity. A simple workout routine, dance or recreational activities with moderate intensity is recommended complemented with sufficient water or fluids to rehydrate.
While we enjoy ourselves in our summer vacation, let us not forget our health and safety to maintain our well-being. Keep in mind, a healthy body and mind enables us to do our activities. And we cannot plunge into that cool sea without that healthy body. (PNC Nadela/OIC-NPC Flores)
