Since the baby's immune system is still developing, common childhood diseases such as polio, measles, tuberculosis, and others can cause physical disorders and even death. As a result, it is important to educate and encourage mothers/caregivers to have their babies immunized and receive other related interventions. In addition, immunization can also help in the normal development and growth of infants.
In observance to the World Immunization Week, the Provincial Government of Sarangani through Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the Municipal Local Government of Glan via Municipal Health Office (MHO) partnered during the “Tutok Buntis” activity which was actively participated by the pregnant women last April 23, 2021. With the presence of the Municipal Mayor Hon. Vivien B. Yap, Dr. Arvin Alejandro – Prov’l Health Officer (PHO) and Prov’l Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) and Ms. Ma. Razel Bustria – Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) Program Provincial Coordinator and other PHO and MHO personnel at Brgy. Baliton, Glan, Sarangani.
The activity highlights the importance and benefits of vaccines for babies as an essential component of having a quality and optimum first 1000 days in a child’s life. The pregnant women were also encouraged to bring their infants to the nearest health centers to be vaccinated; at least 5 visits before the child’s first birthday. Vaccines are tested and proven to be effective, guaranteed to be safe and of good quality and free to all public health facilities.
There are three crucial stages in the first 1000 days of a child’s life: pregnancy, infancy and early childhood which is vital to shape the child’s quality life and nutrition. Hence, vaccination plays a vital part of it, vaccinations should be provided to all children according to the prescribed immunization schedule as it provides protection to the babies and children early in life before they are exposed to life-threatening diseases.
