The World Thyroid day is observed every 25th day of May, which focuses on increasing awareness of thyroid health and educating about prevention and treatment of thyroid diseases. Thus, the Regional Bantay Asin task Force (RBATF) XII initiated to conduct World Thyroid Day Virtual Celebration via Zoom as part the RBATF’s promotion and advocacy activities.
The webinar was actively participated by 65 participants coming from Academe, RBATF members, Nutrition Action Officers, District/City Nutrition Action Officers, Sanitary Inspectors, HRH-NDs and other Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians all over the region. The said activity aims to create greater awareness on thyroid health thereby leads to increase consumption of adequately iodized salt or salt which contains 30-70 ppm of iodine.
The topics discussed include the following: National Salt Iodization Program by OIC-RNPC Annalita Mae V. Flores, Dr. Adimelca C. Gangoso from DOH XII talked about the thyroid health and its common disorders, Diet Therapy for Thyroid health by Ms. Marie Jane Lihao, RND and salt monitoring results per province and cities by NOII Leah Utlang.
There are many misconceptions regarding thyroid disorders and its management. It is important to provide the correct information and to recognize thyroid diseases based on signs and symptoms as well as conduct initial screening procedures. Further, Thyroid disorders can be prevented through proper nutrition and awareness.
The RBATF XII commits to intensify its upcoming activities particularly on the promotion and advocacy of consuming fortified foods especially iodized salts. Moreover, another advocacy activity will be conducted on November 2021 along food fortification day. (NO II Utlang/OIC-NPC Flores)
