SOCCSKSARGEN--- The National Nutrition Council distributed “Bye-Bye, Bansot sa Barangay! Gabay para sa Wastong Nutrisyon ng Barangay!” brochures among Local Government Units (LGUs) to empower Barangay units for effective implementation of Nutrition Program and to reduce prevalence of stunting and other forms of malnutrition in the country.

The brochure provides a quick guide and information about the overview of malnutrition and importance of good nutrition, the roles and responsibilities of Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) and Chair, Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022 framework and salient points, steps in strengthening nutrition program implementation at the barangay level and the recommended actions for Nutrition.

To highlight, recommended steps for the effective management of Nutrition Program at the Barangay level include: (1) Activation of BNC (2) Formulation of Barangay Nutrition Action   Plan (BNAP) and securing appropriate funds (3) Supporting the Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) (4) Implementation of Nutrition-related interventions and activities and  (5) monitoring and evaluation of Nutrition Program, projects and activities.

Consistent with the PPAN 2017-2022 strategic thrusts, LGUs should adopt Nutrition specific, Nutrition sensitive and enabling programs as essential interventions to address underlying causes of malnutrition.

“Bye-Bye, Bansot sa Barangay” is an IEC (Information, Education and Communication) material that will also help in establishing functional BNC, which is vital in improving the nutrition situation of the community.  The multi-sectoral composition of the BNC contributes to the attainment of PPAN goals through their formulated Barangay Nutrition Action Plan (BNAP).    BNAP serves as the mechanism to achieve the nutrition goals at the barangay level which is interrelated and crucial in the formulated plans at each administrative level.

Disseminating IEC materials has become one of the most effective strategies in championing nutrition used by the National Nutrition Council to spread awareness and information in reaching out to the LGUs and general public. (NO II Aurel/OIC-NPC Flores)
