In support to the Governments program towards alleviating hunger and poverty- “Gulayan sa Masa”, National Nutrition Council XII spearheads the Gulayan sa Opisina Project last July 31, 2013 as part of the Nutrition Month Culmination Celebration.
The Gulayan sa Opisina project aspires the planting and production of organically-grown vegetables by the government employees. Increasing their awareness on the benefits of vegetable consumption to help reduce malnutrition and prevent the onset of non-communicable diseases as well as promoting the different technologies of planting vegetables such as raised beds, containerized and bag gardening.
Last September 11, 2013, NEDA XII headed by RD Arturo Valero,launched their Gulayan sa Opisina Project in support to NNC XII program.Utilizing a vacant lot within their office premise they grouped themselves into 3 functional working committee to facilitate the maintenance of the gulayan project.
Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Arceli M. Latonio together with the NNC XII staff, evaluated NEDA’s Gulayan sa Opisina Project last October 25, 2013. A huge transformation was seen – from an empty lot into a masterpiece, seeds grown into green and healthy plants. Variety of technologies was used to maximize the limited space for 18 kinds of vegetables.
Hereafter, the evaluating team set out to the Bureau of Jail Management Penology- Makilala District last October 29, 2013. The Officials and inmates of the facility work hand-in-hand to manage the plants. The team was amazed by grown healthy vegetables in containers and much more knowing that this act was done years ago to facilitate a well-nourished detainee.
Who would have thought that small and empty spaces can turn into a productive one? With such determination and resourcefulness, we can help alleviate hunger and malnutrition for the people of Region 12.
