A Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) should be aware that the barangay has various government programs that aimed to improve the people's quality of life. To minimize overlapping with the responsibilities and tasks of other barangay-based workers, it is necessary that the BNS understands his or her roles and functions.
Last August 17-18, 2021, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Lake Sebu initiated a Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) Training Workshop together with the National Nutrition Council (NNC) XII at Centro Inn, Brgy. Tasiman, Lake Sebu. A total of 28 BNSs all over the LGU actively took part in the training. The activity aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills of the BNSs in the municipality along with the other nutrition-related programs.
The two-day training covered the topics along PPAN, Nutrition Assessment and BNS forms, workshops on the PPAN programs (nutrition specific programs, nutrition sensitive programs, and enabling programs) were also included in the training to deepen the understanding of the participants on the nutrition and nutrition-related programs, projects, and activities and to effectively apply it to their respective communities.
The BNSs expressed their gratitude for the training workshop done, which informed them about the nutrition program and will enable them to effectively deliver nutrition and related services. Moreover, the Municipal Nutrition Office (MNO) plans to conduct Barangay Nutrition Action Plan (BNAP) workshops per cluster barangays to mobilize the Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) and to ensure that nutrition program will be successfully implemented to all barangays.
Furthermore, a BNS, like the other members of the BNC, plays an important role in the management of the barangay nutrition program since he or she is recognized to be knowledgeable about nutrition. Therefore, it is important that a BNS must have a nutrition update to keep up with the current nutrition concerns, as well as to further develop and upgrade BNSs' skills to strengthen their performance as community service providers.
