SOCCSKSARGEN ranks 3rd according to the 2017 National Demographic Health Survey with a prevalence rate of 14.5%. Based on the Department of Health- Field Health Service Information System (DOH-FHSIS) of 2020, the Adolescent Birth Rate or live births to mothers ages 10-19 years old in the region is 20.25%, or a total cases of 9,957 adolescents.

To address the arising issues and concerns on youth the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) issued resolution no. 7 series of 2022 entitled “Enjoining all Local Government Units at the Provincial/City/Municipal and Barangay level to include their respective Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation as members of the Local Nutrition Committee (LNC).

The said resolution aims to engage the youth in promoting good nutrition among young people and throughout the community. Further, to inspire and encourage the local nutrition committee to scale up the investment in a nutrition program that includes projects and activities in the youth sector.

Sangguniang Kabataan serves as the highest policy-making body that decides on matters affecting the youth in the barangay and whose primary objective is to enhance the social, political, economic, cultural, intellectual, moral, spiritual, and physical development of the youth in the country.

Therefore, young people can play a significant role in lobbying for or promoting scaled-up nutrition programs in local governments, which will have an impact on everyone's nutritional status in society.
