In the initiation of breastfeeding in the first hour after birth, proper positioning must be considered. Aside from kangaroo care, initiation of breastfeeding in the first hour gives comfort to the baby as the baby’s and mother’s skin is attached. This strengthens the bond between the mother and the baby.

Breastfeeding after birth can cause the release of the hormone oxytocin, which aids in the shrinkage of the mother's  uterus and may lessen postpartum bleeding.

The baby receives its first immunization during this time through the intake of colostrum which was produced during this period. After birth, the baby receives the colostrum, a highly concentrated milk that is packed with nutrients and antibodies that will help and protect the infant through breastfeeding. Compared to regular breastmilk, it offers a strong and distinctive immunity. And lastly, it aids in the infant's development of proper breathing, swallowing, and sucking techniques.
