Antique - The Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) urged local government units (LGU) to monitor local salt distributors in order to ensure their compliance with the requirements of proper salt storage areas, clean containers for storage and selling of the product, and salt is fortified with iodine.

It will be recalled that the RBATF under the National Nutrition Committee recently monitored the salt distributors in Sibalom, Antique to check their compliance to the Asin Law or Repbublic Act 8172 (Act promoting the Salt Iodization Nationwide).

The two big distributors identified by the task force in Sibalom sourced out their salt from Mindoro via Lipata Port in Culasi or Libertad and were distributed in various towns in the province.

After the feedback session with the representatives of the Provincial Health Office, Office of the Municipal Mayor of Sibalom and Municipal Mayor of Sibalom and Municipal Rural Health Office, the team recommended that distributor should secure their permit with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Municipal Health Office and Sanitation Officers are likewise directed to ensure compliance of the salt distributors to storage instructions of iodized salt to preserve the iodine content of salt being fortified at the source.

The inter-agency task force is composed of representatives from the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, National Food Authority, Philippine Information Agency and  National Nutrition Council.

The Task Force continues to conduct program implementation and monitoring through meetings, visits to warehouses of salt producers, monitoring of salt in ports.
