Malnutrition makes one susceptible to infection. Infection impairs the ability of the body to absorb nutrients which leads to malnutrition. Chronic malnutrition eventually leads to stunting. Hence, the root of this vicious cycle is a weak immune system borne of malnutrition.

Acute respiratory infection (ubo, sipon, lagnat) is prevalent among young children. When left untreated, it can lead to pneumonia.

Unsanitary living conditions increase the child's risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Families should practice proper hygiene and maintain a clean environment to lessen the risk of infections.

Diarrhea and intestinal parasitic infestation such as malaria and schistosomiasis are also common water-borne infections that affect children. It should be noted that dehydration from diarrhea, if untreated, could lead to death. Thus, use of clean water and proper hygiene should be observed to prevent transmission of parasites. Deworming during pregnancy can also help keep the baby safe from parasitic infections, among others.
