Cebu City – Mabini, Bohol’s “Processed Vegetable Meals para sa Kabataan” was acknowledged as a Good Nutrition in the Region during the Grand Nutrition Awards 2013 held on 02 August 2013 at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel, Cebu City.
Stemming from the need to solve the problem of malnutrition, the municipality gave appealing and nutritious food to children beneficiaries of feeding activities. The children were fed with the municipality's local produce banana, squash and malunggay. It also provided an alternative source of income and livelihood to members of MFRIC, the Mabini Food Processing Center.
The short shelf life and the usual recipes of squash and malunggay have reached a point when children no longer want to eat these. With the vital support from DIWA Party-List that provided the processing equipment and the support of the LGU of Mabini, the Food Processing Center came to reality on October 2012. The processed products are fortified with squash and malunggay to increase nutritive value and to make these taste-appealing to children. At the same time, the project aimed to improve the nutritional status of the children and generate funds for mothers involved in the processing. The Department of Labor and Employment provided the technical skills training through the Rural Improvement Club. With the organic, vegetable-based products fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, the nutrient needs of the malnourished children were addressed.
Because of the project’s contribution in the reduction of malnutrition and improvement of the lives of people in Mabini the project was recognized as a Good Nutrition Project. //DFB
