Larena Siquijor Barangay Captains at advocacy meetingLarena, Siquior – Barangay Captains can also be Nutrition Captains. Changing unhealthy eating lifestyles and increasing investments and budget allocations for nutrition require intentional plan and strategy by grassroots or village leaders. There is often an intentional motive among local government units about orienting barangay captains on politics and governance, how about being intentional about orienting barangay captains on nutrition? 

So that  barangay captains are part of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, 14 barangay captains were given orientation about nutrition last 05 March 2013 at the Session Hall, Larena Municipal Hall, Larena, Siquijor.  The following barangays were represented: Bagacay, Balolang, Bintangan, Bontod, Cabulihan, Calunasan, Cang-apa, Cangmalalag, Catamboan, Helen, North Poblacion, Ponong, Sabang and Taculing.

Likewise, so that barangay captains are empowered to formulate local legislation on nutrition, increase its nutrition investments and prioritize nutrition, NO II Dave F. Bargamento of NNC 7discussed the background of the nutrition program, the laws that created the program as well as the roles of the different members of the barangay nutrition councils.

Another orientation was conducted in Enrique Villanueva on February 13, 2013 with NO III Susan Y. Orpilla and NO I Nasudi G. Soluta facilitating. This was attended by the 10 barangay captains coming from barangays Balolong, Binoangam, Balot, Bitaug, Libo, Lotloton, Manan-ao,Pari-an, Tulapos and Olave.

The orientation which is aimed to capacitate barangay captains to manage their respective nutrition programs is one of the capability-building services of NNC 7. The activity was also supported by the Association of Barangay Captains of Larena and Enrique Villanueva and the Provincial Nutrition Committee of Siquijor.// DFB
