Negros Oriental – Until there is monitoring, it is difficult to validate that good nutrition is being promoted. The National Nutrition Council 7 visited eleven municipalities in Negros Oriental to check enforcement levels in good nutrition. Thus far, an increase of healthy Filipinos is expected in Region 7 as monitoring has found more local government units and health offices promote good nutrition.
NO I Ms. Nasudi G. Soluta, RND, who led the team together with AA III Mr. Eduardo B. Baguio visited the municipalities of Tayasan, Manjuyod, Pamplona, Amlan, San Jose, Basay, Sta. Catalina, Siaton, Sibulan, Bacong and Valencia last 18-21 February 2013 for Promote Good Nutrition (PGN) monitoring. The team met with the Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators and PGN-trained barangay implementers such as the midwife, Barangay Health Worker, Barangay Nutrition Scholar, mother-leader, day care worker or Barangay Kagawad, Chair, Committee on Health, whoever was available in the barangay. The monitors also visited barangay health centers, barangay hall and schools and took photos of the IEC materials.
In their discussions with health workers and program implementers, the NNC 7 monitoring team looked into the use of program outcomes in organizing IYCF support groups, how nutrition education classes were conducted, use of and availability of IEC materials and issues and hindrances in the implementation.
The Promote Good Nutrition took off in 2007 as a component of the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program. This includes the conduct of training on Promotion of Good Nutrition for community-based implementers as well as distribution of IEC materials like the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. In Region 7, the training started in 2009 in Negros Oriental and Bohol, considered as priority 2 and 3 provinces. A total of 16 cities, 100 municipalities and 1,666 barangays with 6,956 participants have been trained in Central Visayas as of December 2012. //DFB
