Bohol – A two-person monitoring team, composed of Mr. Arman Manglicmot of NPPD, NNC and Ms. Rina Ampe of FD, NNC monitored the implementation of the Promote Good Nutrition (PGN) in Bohol province on April 11 to 13, 2012.
PGN program is a component of the Accelerated Hunger-Mitigation Program (AHMP) that was started in 2007. It includes the conduct of trainings on Promotion of Good Nutrition for community-based implementers as well as distribution of a number of IEC materials promoting good nutrition particularly the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos.
The PGN is being implemented to contribute to hunger-mitigation through improved food and nutrition knowledge, attitude and practices of families in target areas. Specifically, the PGN aims to 1) increase the number of 0-6 month old infants who are exclusively breastfed; 2) increase the number of infants 6-11 months old receiving calorie and nutrient-dense complementary food; 3) increase the number of households with improved diets in terms of quality and quantity; and 4) increase the number of households involved in food production activities.
The three day monitoring covered the municipalities of Cortes, Balilihan and Ubay. Two barangays were visited in each municipalities identified. The team determined the results of the training in terms of achieving the expected outcomes and check the availability and use of the IEC materials distributed by NNC. Their activities during the monitoring visit were courtesy calls with the Mayors of identified local government units, Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Municipal Health Officers, interview with the Municipal IYCF-PGN Coordinators, review of records of the IEC materials received and interviews with the members of the Breastfeeding Support Group. They also checked the use and status of IEC materials specifically NGF tarpaulins, posters on Egg, Breastfeeding and Milk Code. The team gave recommendations on the care of the IEC materials and on the formation of IYCF-Breastfeeding Support Groups in the barangays. On the last day, the monitoring team provided feedback to Bohol Governor and Provincial Nutrition Committee Chair, Hon. Edgar M. Chatto, on the status of the PGN implementation in the province. Mr. Dave F. Bargamento, NO II of NNC 7 joined the team and also acted as translator.
