FNS-EWS enumerators in practicumDanao City – Chosen mainly because of their ready support for the nutrition program, despite it being a relatively new concept in their community, the five sentinel barangays of Carmen, Cebu generated enough enthusiasm and optimism to propel the municipality and its goal towards improved nutrition thru the Food and Nutrition Security – Early Warning System (FNS-EWS).

Completing the FNS-EWS training for household enumerators, health and nutrition workers and members of the barangay local nutrition committees of Barangays Barring, Cogon East, Corte, Fuente and Poblacion, showed their eagerness especially in the group activities held on 03-04 December 2015 at the Intosan Resort, Danao City.

Carmen, Cebu was pinpointed as the Central Visayas’ second FNS-EWS area after Buenavista in the Province of Bohol, being one of the consistently highest ranking municipalities in terms of malnutrition with 16.25% in the 2014 OPT Plus data and ranking 3rd in the region.
Facilitated by NO III Susan Y. Orpilla and NO II Nasudi G. Soluta of NNC 7 with MNPCs Pinky B. Capangpangan and Carlene Marie V. Cabahug, the training catered to thirty-two (32) participants made up of RHMs, PHNs, BHWs, BNSs, and Kagawad/Punong Barangays all very eager to make changes in their respective communities.

Volunteers with no added incentives for their “extra” tasks, the men and women of the five (5) sentinels barangays were up to the challenge of identifying and providing remedy for food and nutrition insecurity in their communities.//NGS
