Maribojoc, Bohol -- Food additives are substances that are added to food to maintain or improve its safety, freshness, flavor, texture, or appearance. One of the examples of natural food additives commonly used by all is salt. But beware of consuming too much salt as it could be harmful to your health. Before food additives can be used, they must be tested for potential adverse effects on human health.
Let me show you some different types of approved food additives that you may see on ingredients:
- Preservatives: calcium sorbate, ascorbic acid, and sodium nitrate
- Color additives: fruit and vegetable juices, beta-carotene and yellow 5
- Flavors enhancers: mono sodium glutamate (MSG) and yeast
- Stabilizers and thickening agents: gelatin, guar gum, and whey
Here are some food additives effects when you consume them excessively or when you are having allergic reactions:
- Digestive disorders – diarrhea
- Nervous disorders – hyperactivity, insomnia, and irritability
- Respiratory problems – asthma, rhinitis, and sinusitis
- Skin problems – hives, itching, rashes, and swelling
We don’t need to worry to consume such food products because there is an international scientific expert committee administered jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) called Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) accountable for assessing/evaluating the safety of food additives, contaminants, and naturally occurring toxicants. However, if you need to consume it, it is suggested to ingest it occasionally.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission also establishes food labeling standards and guidelines.
In addition, try eliminating processed and packaged foods in your “to buy list”. Nothing beats fresh and natural foods or ingredients so add these to your list instead when you go grocery shopping or market visits. // ND II, Annie Claire Añasco, RND
