Cebu City – Following the success of the 1st Barangay Nutrition Forum in June this year introducing the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) and the roles of the Barangay Nutrition Committees (BNC), the National Nutrition Council Region VII (NNC 7), in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region VII (DILG 7), once again taps on the barangays for the support in their formulation of their respective Devolution Transition Plans which is seen as an opportunity to once and for all institutionalize the barangay level nutrition programs.
Scheduled on the 16th of November 2021, the activity dubbed the Regional Dialogue with Punong Barangay: Enabling Nutrition Devolution, intends to solicit support of Barangay Nutrition Committee Chairs in the implementation of the PPAN.
It is highlighted by a message from A/Sec. Dr. Azucena M. Dayanghirang, Executive Director of the National Nutrition Council, technical inputs on nutrition from the NNC Region 7 and the DBM 7, a workshop to assess barangay nutrition situations and generate commitment for action from BNC chairperson, a panel discussion on the nutrition programs at the barangay level and call for action from different sectors.
With the activity, the NNC 7 hopes to improve the nutrition climate in Central Visayas particularly in increasing functional local nutrition committees, which had been reported to only be at 25.7 percent fully functional, 35.3 percent substantially functional, 22.8 percent partially functional, and 7.4 percent are non-functional, according to functionality data gathered by DILG 7 in June 2021. The data collected from the e-OPT plus in 2020 on the other hand shows that 60,819 (10.1%) are chronically malnourished or stunted, 24,869 (4.2%) are underweight, 16,211 (2.7%) are overweight/obese and 14,382 (2.4%) are acutely malnourished wasted in the region.
Recognized to be a main implementor of nutrition programs, there is a need to raise the PPAN knowledge at the barangay level, and for members of the BNCs to be familiar with their duties and responsibilities in nutrition program management with special mentions on nutrition investments and nutrition program formulation.
Other than Punong Barangays, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), Sangguniang Kabataan Chairpersons and other members of the BNC are also invited to said event.
