ham

Negros Oriental - In the Philippines, Christmas eve feast known as Noche Buena has Hamonada or Christmas Ham as one of the feature viands for the celebration. This tradition of eating ham came from the Spaniards who brought Christianity in the Philippines. But how much nutrition do we really get in this sought-after food for the holidays?

Ham comes from the leg part of a pig. The meat is preserved with either salt or smoke, and the preservation process varies. Ham is rich in protein, low in carbohydrates, fat and fiber. It is a complete protein since it provides all nine essential amino acids. Overall, ham alone is low in calories. Micronutrients are also found in this popular pork product. It is particularly rich in Selenium and Iron. Thiamine and other B vitamins, phosphorus, zinc and potassium can also be found in decent amounts.

Christmas season is particularly celebrated with everything sweet. So, Filipinos usually prepare Christmas Hams with brown sugar syrup or crumbles. This addition makes Christmas Ham high in calories. In enjoying the festivities of the holiday season, it is most important to remember the basics in observing a healthy diet, that is, MOVABA – Moderation, Variety and Balance. So, let’s enjoy our Christmas Ham in moderation to maintain a healthy, well-nourished Christmas season. // ND II Lyneth Anne A. Amahit, RND
