Cebu City – It’s only logical to say that it is almost impossible to get proper nutrition without the help of our local farmers. Our everyday food needs would not be possible if it weren’t for our local farmers. They are the unsung heroes of nutrition world. Without them getting nutrient-dense meals would be close to impossible unless you want to resort to supplementation. Do you think they are not getting enough credit?
I recently read a newsletter containing information about how farmers today are getting more support from our very own Department of Agriculture (DA), as modern times become more affiliated with technology. The DA started modernizing agriculture through the Digital Farmers Program (DFP) which introduces the use of the internet and its application to their lifestyle to improve their income.
Not only is that a breakthrough for our local farmers but also enhances the availability of getting wholesome nutrients from organic fresh produce which constitutes to less handling of the product. It just gives farmers more opportunity to sell or be in contact with consumers directly.
Considered as one of the nutrition sensitive interventions of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, the push for the Digital Farmers Program advocates the value of “farm to table” mantra. The program is not just connecting the farmers to consumers but also link them to businesses minimizing middlemen. They can also be connected to food and nutrition enthusiasts to promote good nutrition. Programs that help and support our farmers way of life and income is a benefit and a win for nutrition. Should markets or groceries be introduced to technology in promoting healthy eating and good nutrition? This is a vast potential to improve the nutritional well-being of many. // NO I Gab Flores, RND
