Basay, Negros Oriental - Throughout the ages, some people turn to natural remedies to help keep their hearts healthy, such as herbs and spices. Different populations and ethnicity have used herbs and spices for natural healing. The terms “herb” and “spice” are often used interchangeably but there are key differences. According to Meriam-Webster, an “herb” is defined as a type of plant with a soft stem of leaves or flowers while “spice” is a flavoring for food made from a part of a plant either its fruits, seeds, or roots, and is usually dried and often used as a powder.
Let me share with you five commonly used herbs and spices that are good for the heart.
- GARLIC
It may be a strong-smelling bulb used in cooking, but garlic can help protect the heart by keeping the blood vessels adaptable and reducing cholesterol and triglycerides.
- CINNAMON
Just like garlic, cinnamon also reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels. For people with diabetes, it is also beneficial since it can lower blood sugar levels.
- TURMERIC
Turmeric helps reduce inflammation and oxidation that could lower the risk of heart disease.
- GINGER
The antioxidants present in ginger help reduce the formation of plaque in the arteries caused by high cholesterol.
- Cilantro
Like the spices mentioned above, this herb also protects the heart by lowering blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol which lowers the risk of heart disease. Cilantro is commonly known as “Wansoy” in Tagalog.
