Cebu City – In celebration of the Philippine Heart Month in February, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7 featured during the second episode airing of its virtual program e-HISGOT a story of a selfless father from Lapu-Lapu City who has hypertension.

The said episode was aired on 17 February 2022 via NNC 7’s official Facebook Page. The episode was anchored with the theme “Ka-HEARTner, may chika ako! Heart-to-Heart Talk for a Healthy and Happy Life!”

Tatay Alden, a father of two and a grandfather is a carpenter and a lechonero. He was diagnosed with hypertension and high cholesterol and triglycerides, a incidental diagnosis when he had his vaccination against COVID-19. His condition was a result of a combined unhealthy lifestyle and emotional stress.

Live viewers of the program shared the same experience with Tatay Alden and shared their advice. Among these includes changing his lifestyle, family support, regularly taking his maintenance medicine, having physical activity, and eating healthier food among others.

During her technical discussion, NNC 7 RNPC Dr. Parolita A. Mission discussed the possible reasons for acquiring this condition. Dr. Mission stressed the importance of proper nutrition and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent non-communicable diseases like heart diseases. She also shared the messages of the 10 Kumainments to help maintain a healthy heart. Among which includes:

  • Kumainment No. 1: “Eat variety of food”;
  • Kumainment No. 3: “Eat more fruits and vegetables every day”;
  • Kumainment No. 8: “Limit intake of salty, fatty and sugar-rich foods”;
  • Kumainment No. 9: “Attain normal body weight”; and
  • Kumainment No. 10: “Be active. Avoid alcoholic beverages and don’t smoke”
