Carmen, Cebu - The University of San Carlos Department of Nutrition-Dietetics immersed their fourth-year students in the public health nutrition internship program in Carmen, Cebu. The interns are to have a blended internship program where they are tasked to assist and aid the different barangays of this 3rd class municipality in addressing their nutrition problems.
The twenty interns are deployed to the barangays with a high malnutrition rate where most of the barangays are in mountainous areas of Carmen. Their learning will be facilitated by their faculty Ms. Girlie Vera Cruz-Libato to be assisted by Carmen MNPC Nessa Mae Dimco Jorquia together with PNFP Christine Lopez of NNC 7 and ND II Geraldine Pausanos of DOH CV CHD/NNC 7.
The interns had a courtesy call with MNC Chair and Mayor Hon. Carlo T. Villamor and MNAO Dr. Elmer F. Batao on their first day in the municipality before they were fielded to their assigned barangays. The interns will render 300 hours of public health nutrition starting 28 March to 20 May 2022 where they are expected to conduct community nutrition assessment, help their assigned barangays implement the 2022 Barangay Nutrition Action Plan and formulate the 2023 BNAP and ensure its integration in the Barangay Development Plan and Annual Investment Program.
This opportunity will serve as an eye-opener to the interns on what public health nutrition is in the real world. This could be a steppingstone in their future careers as professional public health nutritionists. // PNFP Cebu Province Christine Lopez, RND
