Amlan, Negros Oriental – Amlan is always ready to fight against malnutrition, and to help with this battle, they have conducted a Barangay Nutrition Scholars Refresher Course. The activity which was attended by 13 participants was held on 19 April 2022 at the Smoking Cessation Clinic, Rural Health Unit, Poblacion, Amlan, Negros Oriental.
Stunting is the highest form of malnutrition in the municipality for ages 0-59 months old. Although the rate has significantly decreased from 2019 to 2021 from 19.3% to 13.8%, but the Municipal Nutrition Committee ceased to be complacent and continue to test and apply strategies to better the nutrition landscape in the community.
ND II Shaira Calumpang and ND II Raya Faith Luce both HRH for Nutrition under the Nutritionists Dietitian Deployment Program served as resource speakers for the refresher course. The duo discussed the first 1000 days, roles, and functions of a BNS, the roles of BNS in barangay nutrition program management, weighing a child, length/height measurement, computing age in months, classification of nutrition status, and barangay nutrition committee: organize, mobilize, or reactivate. The newly appointed barangay health workers from barangay Poblacion were also invited to join the activity for them to be oriented on the nutrition program at the barangay level.
The Municipal Nutrition Committee is hopeful that through constantly providing technical assistance and equipping their barangay nutrition scholars with the updates of dynamic nutrition programs, will pave the way in addressing the stunting problem in the municipality and continually reduce its prevalence rate. // ND II Shaira Vita A.
