Bohol Province - Aside from the periodic conduct of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon and Idol Ko Si Nanay, it has long been a practice of the Municipal Health Office of Sikatuna, Bohol to orient first-time pregnant women and lactating mothers on the basic lessons on motherhood through the conduct of one-day mother’s class. For this year, the activity attended by 26 mothers held on 24 March 2022 at the RHU in Sikatuna, Bohol.
The attendees included first-time pregnant and lactating mothers from barangays Abucay Norte, Abucay Sur, Can-agong, Cambuac Sur and Poblacion I. Nurses under the Nurse Deployment Program of the DOH and the midwives of the Sikatuna Municipal Health Office took turns in discussing the topics to the participants.
The objective of this institutionalized activity is to answer the queries and anxieties of first-time mothers like problems on not producing breastmilk or what type of complementary foods should be introduced to the infants when they reach sixth (6th) month after birth. Topics during the said mother’s class included importance and quality of antenatal care, complications of pregnancy, breastfeeding, laboratories that a pregnant woman must undergo, hygiene of pregnant and lactating women, newborn screening, family planning/responsible parenthood, post-partum care, emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases, and national immunization program.
To further enhance the learnings of the first-time moms, the Municipal Nutrition Committee included in their pipeline the conduct of Idol Ko Si Nanay roll-out session to the different barangays. This is also to supplement their knowledge on nutrition in the First one thousand days this July and August in time of the nutrition month and breastfeeding month, respectively. // ND II Marcel John J.
