Cebu City - The Central Visayas Regional Nutrition Council (RNC) held its second meeting for the year on 15 July 2022 via Zoom Conference Call. The RNC is made up the different regional directors of the different regional line agencies and the various presidents of the non-government organizations that all work towards a better nutrition situation for all in Central Visayas.

Thirteen out of 17 members joined the meeting. Agencies represented include DOH CV CHD, DA7, DILG7, CDP7, DSWD7, DBM7, DOLE7, DOST7, DTI7, NEDA7, PAN Cebu Chapter, PNA Region VII, and NCP. It was also graced by the Chairs of the newly formed Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) sub-networks, namely, Ms. Lianne Cormanes of the University of San Carlos for SUN Academe, Mr. Jonel Ucab of the Green Pantry for SUN Business, and Mr. Rembert Artigo of Rotaract Clubs of Rotary International District 3860 for SUN Civil Society Alliance.

The meeting was presided by Dr. Jonathan Niel Erasmo for the RNC Chair Dr. Jaime Bernadas of DOH CV CHD. The agenda of the meeting consisted of what had been accomplished in the 2022 RNC Workplan, this year’s MELLPI PRO results, and who are the recipient of awards. A new RNC Resolution was also presented. Entitled “Including Nutrition Shepherding as primary role of the RNC Sub-Committee for LNC Functionality”, the resolution aims to mentor the least functional local governments to adopt policies, programs, and interventions that can help improve their nutrition situation following the example of our region’s most functional LGUs using a peer learning approach.

The RNC as a policy making body also approved the plans for the upcoming Grand Nutrition Awards and 17th Regional Congress of Nutrition Action Officers. This back-to-back event will be held on 12 August 2022 and will recognize and honor outstanding performers in nutrition both the local government units and local nutrition focal points for their exemplary service to their community and undying advocacy for better nutrition for all people.

Also included in the day’s meeting was the updates on the Typhoon Odette activities and the updates on the ECCD F1K/TKSP activities. The regional and LGU workers are working overtime to implement the recovery and rehabilitation plans post Ty Odette and developing ways to be even more prepared for the next environmental tragedy that will happen to our typhoon-prone country.

The actions of the Central Visayas RNC have strengthened even more considering the environmental hurdles that the region has gone through earlier this year. Right now, the focus is on resiliency and the rebuilding of what was lost during Typhoon Odette. The committee believes that together, they can mitigate the deterioration malnutrition despite what we have gone through by continuing our combined efforts to help one another and bring out the best outcomes for the community.
