Instant Noodles

Cebu City - Noodles are one of the most instant foods that are being enjoyed by many because they are inexpensive and easy to prepare that only require you a minute. They also appeal to those people who are on a tight budget. It is also present in relief goods being distributed to the general population during typhoons and during lockdowns during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instant noodles are no doubt to be tasty and super convenient, but their nutrient content deserves a second look.

Although some instant noodles provide iron, B vitamins, and manganese, they lack fiber, protein, and other crucial vitamins and minerals. Additionally, their monosodium glutamate (MSG), tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an additive to preserve processed foods, and high sodium contents may negatively affect health. Hence, eating instant noodles on a regular basis is not advisable and most especially unhealthy. We should stick to the quote “too much of everything is always bad”. Instant noodles are loaded with sodium as it is crucial in preserving the shelf life of the noodle to last up to months or even years.

Sodium is one of the essential minerals that is needed in the body for proper functioning. It is also an important electrolyte needed to maintain homeostasis and it also helps in the electrical signals in the body, allowing muscles to fire and the brain to work. But too much sodium may also have its accompanying disadvantage, especially to the heart, and kidneys which may lead to increased blood pressure that will eventually harm these organs in the long run if poorly controlled.

Also, instant noodles may take time to be digested and could eventually lead to metabolic problems and or disorders. Increased consumption of this convenient food has been associated with obesity since instant noodles are primarily made of flour which equates to more calories with less fiber.

The bottom line, limiting your consumption of instant noodles, instead eating a variety of foods that are rich in fibers, vitamins, and minerals that are not synthetic and shall come from an organic source, avoiding processed foods, and proper diet and exercise have always been the best choice for your health. // Nutrition Officer I Armie D.
