2022 Brain FoodE. Villanueva, Siquijor - The brain is the most complex organ of the human body. Throughout life, the brain monitors our daily operations and activities, and the brain will communicate with other organs to coordinate their respective functions.

Amazingly, there is a relationship between the food we eat and the functioning of our brains. What we eat can also affect the neurons, which are the major cells of the brain.  A healthy diet with proper amounts of nutrients will keep our brain healthy in such a way it improves our learning, mood, attention, and mental health.

An unhealthy diet such as food that contains a lot of sugars and is high in fat causes the body to release stress hormones that can activate the brain’s microglia and astrocytes. These are key cells in the central nervous system which maintain homeostasis and support the function of the neurons. This activation can cause inflammation in certain parts of the brain which includes the hippocampus, which regulates neurogenesis (the process by which new neurons are formed in the brain) and memory. The inflammation in the hippocampus can negatively affect our cognitive abilities which make it harder to plan, focus or remember things or can even lead to depression.

To keep your brain functioning properly there is certain food shown to improve brain function such as food with the components of omega-3 fatty acids. These are essential nutrients that the body can’t make on its own.  If the body did not get enough omega-3 fatty acids, then inflammation and its resulting negative cognitive effects like certain brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or depression may take place.

Foods that are rich sources of Omega 3 fatty acids are found in mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines, and other seafood. It is also common in plants like peanuts and seeds like flax seeds.

Therefore, any problem that affects the brain can change our thinking, emotions, or behaviors. The research found out that proper nutrition and a healthy diet can improve many brain functions while a poor diet can have a negative effect on our cognitive functions. A healthy diet is the foundation of a healthy and happy brain!  // ND II Karen F. Abe, RND
