Cebu City – The third part of this series on things to remember in taking anthropometric measurements will talk about the ways to take care of the tools and equipment for anthropometric measurements and the tips for the actual recording of data.
To ensure functional and good quality anthropometric equipment, here are some tips to note:
- Regularly clean and inspect the anthropometric instruments. Report any indications of damage immediately especially if the tool could impair the functionality of the tool and request a replacement of nonfunctional tools.
- Ensure that tools and equipment are consistently verified and calibrated.
- Observe instructions for maintaining the measurement tools.
- Make sure that batteries are working or change the batteries, as needed before using digital scales.
In measuring and recording, below are things to remember:
- Record data with pencils rather than pens to fix errors easily when needed.
- Prevent misunderstanding or record mismatches by making sure to capture all pertinent information about one child before proceeding to measure the next child.
- Enter information to the closest 0.1 kilograms and 0.1 cm, respectively.
- Always double-check the report after the measuring assistant records the height and weight of a child.
- Clearly enter the anthropometric data in the recording sheet for OPT Plus.
The next series will talk about the ways to establish rapport with the parent or guardian accompanying the child before the actual measurement. // DMO II Christine Lopez, RND
