2022 Dec25 ChooseHealthyHolidayCarmen, Cebu – Holiday is just around the corner. Staying healthy is a must, especially this season. Without risking our health, we could partake in the sumptuous holiday feast. Preparing and eating large meals and desserts, mixing with holiday crowds, and spending time with friends and loved ones are just a few of the activities that make the holidays so enjoyable. Of course, the same factors that make the holidays so enjoyable can also harm your health.

Here are some tips on how to stay healthy this holiday season:

Stay hydrated - We need to be hydrated to maintain the 60% of the water that makes up our body's entire weight. Moreover, water is required for body processes, such as sustaining our cells' fluids and providing nutrients. Staying hydrated doesn’t mean we can enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages as much as we want. Moderation should be remembered.

Choose healthy alternatives - With a few simple diet changes, you can enjoy your favorite holiday foods without gaining much weight. For instance, we can replace mashed potatoes with mashed sweet potatoes, for example.

Make healthy food choices – In planning, preparing, and eating this holiday season, making healthy food choices is a must. Prepare a healthy holiday menu and load your plate with nutritious foods. Choose food that doesn’t need to be cooked in deep fry oil. Steaming, baking, and grilling are some alternatives in cooking. Bring a salad or a vegetable tray if you know healthy dishes will be scarce at your family meal.

Make time for physical activity – During the holiday season, it's easy to neglect physical activity. Exercise daily is essential for good health. Making time for physical activity is a must. An example of that is just having a walk in your garden for at least 30 mins. It’s not that hard to do yet very convenient.

Drink alcoholic beverages moderately - Excessive drinking makes you more likely to make poor food choices. Consuming too much alcohol can have a negative impact on our immune system as well.

Focus on FUN, not on the food – Participate in different games and presentations regardless of the prizes you will receive. It’s also one way for being active during this holiday season.

Sleep is a must – Parties are everywhere but we shouldn’t forget to get enough sleep. Don’t trade sleep for alcohol. Tiredness can lead to increased stress, low energy, and unhealthy eating and drinking habits. Don't overbook yourself with holiday activities and try to keep a consistent bedtime every night.

We can enjoy the holiday season without compromising our health. Staying healthy and happy can keep us going for years to come. Just be mindful of the food to consume. // ND II Geraldine Ma S. Pausanos, RND
