2022 Dec27 VitaminCSamboan, Cebu – Ascorbic acid, another name for vitamin C, is a water-soluble nutrient that can be found in some foods. All bodily tissues require it for growth, development, and repair. It has a role in a variety of bodily functions, including the production of collagen, iron absorption, immune system health, wound healing, and the preservation of cartilage, bones, and teeth. Experts agree that it is among the safest and most effective nutrients.

The benefits of vitamin C may include defense against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular illness, prenatal health issues, eye disease, and even skin aging.  It is one of many antioxidants that can protect against free radical damage, as well as toxic chemicals and pollutants such as cigarette smoke. Free radicals can accumulate and contribute to the development of diseases like cancer, heart disease, and arthritis.

Excess vitamin C is not stored in our bodies. Anything that we don't need or use, will be excreted in our urine. This means that we must consume vitamin C-rich foods daily to ensure that our bodies receive the nutrients they require to function properly. Too little vitamin C can cause skin bruising, bleeding gums, slow wound healing, loose teeth, tender joints, and infections.

The body also needs vitamin C to make collagen, a protein required to help wounds heal. In addition, vitamin C improves the absorption of iron from plant-based foods and helps the immune system work properly to protect the body from disease.

We can get this nutrient from Citrus fruits and juices (such as oranges and grapefruit), as well as red and green peppers and kiwifruit, as these are high in vitamin C. Other vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables include broccoli, strawberries, cantaloupe, baked potatoes, and tomatoes. You can also get this nutrient from vitamin C-fortified foods and beverages. Check the product labels to see if vitamin C has been added to a food product. // ND II, Bea Margaux E. Cornelia, RND
