Cebu City- In continuation from the Tips on how to measure length or height of children: Introduction, this part will talk about the steps in measuring 0-23 months children using the height board. Before starting the procedure, secure the consent of the parent or guardian of the child and explain the steps that are to be taken and the purpose of the activity.

Once the measuring tool has been calibrated and verified for use, position the board horizontally on a stable, hard surface. Inform the parent or caregiver that the child will be measured on an elevated surface, such as a strong table or the ground, if set down on a desk or other flat surface make sure it is stable to prevent mishaps.

If in need, ask for the assistance of the parent or guardian in making sure that the child is still or is not restless during the assessment. Also ask the guardian to remove any headwear and footwear that the child is wearing.

Let the guardian place the child on the height board carefully. Request them to hold the head in place on the height board by gently placing their hands over the child's ears, the assistant or mother/caregiver should maintain the proper position with their head precisely above the child's head.

The Measurer will then check to see if the child is lying straight and with their shoulders contacting the board from a position to the side of the board. Hold the child's legs firmly in place with one hand while sliding the footboard with the other. Be mindful not to put too much pressure or force on the child to prevent the child from getting hurt.

When the child is in place, the measurer then reads aloud the measurement to the nearest 0.1cm while the assistant records the data. Make sure to verify and affirm the recorded measurement. The next article will talk about the tips and guidelines when measuring the height of children 24-59 months old. So, stay tuned! // DMO II Christine Lopez, RND
