January2023 nutsCebu City - One of the “go to” foods of many people when getting hungry are nuts. It is easy to eat and very convenient.

There are many types of nuts, and it is just a matter of availability and budget to get the specific types of nuts to eat.

Tree nuts and peanuts include complex matrices rich in unsaturated fatty acids and other bioactive substances, including high-quality vegetable protein, fiber, minerals, tocopherols, phytosterols, and phenolic compounds. Nuts are nutrient-dense foods with these complex matrices.

Consuming nuts has been linked in epidemiologic research to lower rates of diabetes in women, gallstones, and coronary heart disease in both sexes. Limited research also points to its favorable effects on inflammation, cancer, and hypertension.

There are also other adverse effects when consuming too many nuts. According to Alan R. Gaby, M.D author of Nutritional Medicine “If you ever felt gassy or bloated after eating nuts, you’re not alone. It’s a common side effect, thanks to compounds in nuts called phytates and tannins, which make them difficult to digest. And eating too much fat, which is found abundantly in nuts, in a short period of time can lead to diarrhea.”

Also, eating too many nuts may also lead to weight gain, so it is better to be mindful of how much you eat daily.

Even though this food contains a lot of health benefits, eating too much of this specific food may also give adverse effects on your health. It is recommended to be mindful of how much you eat to stay on a healthy level. // PDO I Noah Vincent D. Gallo, RND, MSPH
