January2023 PhosphorusCebu City – What is phosphorus? Is it essential for our body?

Phosphorus is found in many foods naturally and can also be taken as a supplement. It has several functions in the body. Phosphorus is a crucial component of cell membranes, bones, and teeth. It maintains a normal range of blood pH and aids in the activation of enzymes.

The body's phosphorus levels are closely regulated by the kidneys, bones, and intestines. Several processes take place to retain phosphorus storage and attempt to maintain normal levels if the diet is deficient in phosphorus or too little is absorbed.

Phosphorus is present in red meat, poultry, seafood, legumes, and nuts. But the richest source of phosphorus are dairy products. Phosphorus from these sources is called organic phosphorus which can be absorbed efficiently either from animal or some plant sources.

Plant sources like seeds, legumes and whole grains contain a specific form of phosphorus (storage form) called phytates or phytic acid which can reduce the absorption of phosphorus.

Hypophosphatemia, or phosphorus deficiency, is indicated by blood phosphorus levels that are below normal. On the other hand, hyperphosphatemia a phosphorus toxicity means that your body contains a high concentration of phosphorus in the blood.

Phosphorus can be healthy when taken within the recommended range. Consuming too much phosphorus for a long time may also lead to unwanted effects to the body. // PDO I Noah Vincent D. Gallo, RND, MSPH
