Cebu City – Mothers housed in the evacuation centers at the South Road Properties will soon go through lactation management counselling. The Nutrition Cluster of Central Visayas together with non-government organizations namely LATCH and Nanay Bayanihan will be training peer counsellors on lactation education and breastfeeding.
The collaborative endeavor was forged last 06 December 2013 at Kamagong Conference Room.
LATCH (Lactation, Attachment, Training, Counseling, Help), is a hospital based non-profit organization established in 2006 that offers quality lactation education and peer counseling services to mothers who wish to breastfeed. Meanwhile, Nanay Bayaninhan is a volunteer initiated project aimed at supporting mothers and protecting infants and young children during disaster situations. Both non-government organizations together with the Nutrition Cluster will train peer counsellors on breastfeeding and complementary feeding.
The peer counsellors will be trained on infant and young child feeding in emergencies that covers exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding while continuing breastfeeding. As breastmilk-substitutes are discouraged, the training is meant to increase consciousness among mothers on the benefits of breastfeeding. // DFB
