Cebu City - How often do you or your friends complain about bloating? There are days that we feel “guttfuly” normal that we do not have any concerns with our tummy. Yet some days we tend to become easily full and notice that you are bloated.
What is a bloated stomach?
Bloating is a condition in which your stomach feels full and stretched, usually because of gas. When our gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas, it causes abdominal bloating. Bloating is commonly described as feeling of being full, tight, or swelling of the abdomen. In addition, your abdomen may be distended, hard, or painful.
Although bloating may be a symptom of certain medical conditions, it is usually caused by gas, digestive issues, or dietary factors. The gas or air that filled the GI tract is a by-product of digestion.
Here are five (5) common foods that may cause bloating.
- Dairy products - If you’re lactose intolerant, dairy can cause major digestive problems. Symptoms include bloating, gas, cramping, and diarrhea.
- Beans - Most beans contain sugars called alpha-galactosides, which belong to a group of carbs called FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Monosaccharides and Polyols) that are highly fermentable.
- Broccoli and cruciferous vegetables – These foods contain FODMAPs, so they may cause bloating in some people.
- Onions and Garlic – Some strong compounds found in these vegetables can react to the acid in the stomach that gives out gas.
- Carbonated Drinks - These drinks contain high amounts of carbon dioxide, a gas. // DMO II Gabe Henriel P. Sucalit, RND
