TACLOBAN CITY -- To assist in the implementation of the "Local Government Unit (LGU) Mobilization," a strategy aiming for a holistic approach to fast-track the improvement of nutrition situation in nutritionally depressed localities, four teams have been created by the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Nutrition.
This developed during the 3rd Quarter Meeting of the RTWG on Nutrition in Eastern Visayas held on September 15, 2017 at the Leyte Park Hotel, here. Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo Jr., National Nutrition Council (NNC) Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC), presented the plan to the body for deliberation and endorsement to the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC).
Each team composed of multi-agency, National Nutrition Council (NNC), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Harmonized Initiatives of Media for the Spread of Good Nutrition in Region 8 (HIMSoG-8), and non-government organization membership will be assigned to a target province.
The team shall assist, mentor and demonstrate to LGU leaders and nutrition program managers on how nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions can be implemented for the sustained improvement in the nutrition situation of each locality.
Identified for capacity building through nutrition action planning workshops are the Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAO), Municipal Health Officers (MHOs), Municipal Social Welfare Development Officers (MSWDOs), Municipal Planning and Development Officers (MPDOs), and Municipal Agriculturists (MAs). And their counterparts in the city and in the province.
The team shall educate the concerned LGU officials on effective nutrition program management and on specific nutrition interventions; document their processes and identify their good practices along one or more concerns of nutrition program management, sharing and duplicating from model LGUs.
Peer mentoring approach shall also be applied through which LGUs that have shown good performance in nutrition program management could tutor the non-or poor performing LGUs.
Further, the team shall also visit the target cities/municipalities regularly to observe how the Local Nutrition Action Plan (LNAP) is being implemented. And identify choke points in nutrition program management--if there are, and together with the city/municipal nutrition action officer (CMNAO) and city/municipal nutrition committee (CMNC) explore and try strategies to address the choke points.
