PSNDNational Nutrition Council Regional Office VIII joined the launching of the 28th National Statistics Month Celebration of the region for the year 2017. The celebration kicked off with a motorcade and was immediately followed by the opening program held at Robinsons Place Tacloban on October 2, 2017. Participants from various government offices, local government units, academic institutions, and state universities and colleges actively took part and showed support to the Philippine Statistics Month Celebration. The opening of statistical exhibits was the highlight of the launching. Regional Director Wilma Perante of PSA VIII, Atty. Bonifacio G. Uy, Regional Director of NEDA VIII, and PDEA Regional Director Edgar T. Jubay conducted the ribbon-cutting which formally started the statistical exhibits.

The theme “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards Ambisyon Natin 2040” reflects the important role of reliable statistics and factual information in determining appropriate strategies for tracking the progress towards AmBisyon Natin 2040, where all Filipinos are envisioned to enjoy a matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay. NNC shares the same vision by improving the nutrition situation of the country as a contribution to the achievement of Ambisyon Natin 2040. This, of course, is achieved through the various programs designed to stem the stagnating and worsening of wasting, stunting and micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight & obesity in the Philippines.

During the statistical exhibit, NNC VIII presented the 2016 Eastern Visayas Nutrition Situation and the Chronic Food Insecurity Situation in 4 Provinces of Region VIII wherein it showed the alarming rate of stunting with a high prevalence in the region. Some of the factors attributing to the region’s chronic food insecurity situation are shown such as low value livelihood strategies, landlessness, vulnerability to natural disasters, and poor physical capitals. With all these data being presented to the public, NNC is hoping for a faster action in order to achieve Ambisyon Natin 2040. (NDR)
