Palo, Leyte- On Wednesday over 500 barangay nutrition scholars in Eastern Visayas gathered together via virtual platform to celebrate the Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ Day.
This year, the Eastern Visayas Association of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (EVA-BNS) convened in particular to gain updates and knowledge of the 2021 Nutrition Month theme, “Malnutrisyon patuloy na labanan, first 1,000 days tutukan”.
Invited speaker from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Local Gvernment Operations Officer V, Ms. Raida Cabahit talked about the Executive Order No. 138, particularly on the implementation of the Supreme Court Ruling on the Mandanas-Garcia Petition.
EO 138, signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on June 1, 2021 states that “The functions, services, and facilities which shall be fully devolved from the national government (NG) to the local government units (LGUs) no later than the end of FY (fiscal year) 2024, shall include those indicated under Section 17 of RA No. 7160 and other existing laws which subsequently devolved functions of the NG to LGUs."
On the other hand, Department of Agriculture, Senior Agriculturist, Ms.Nemie Abalos shared the topic on “The Right Veges sa mga Chikiting”. The topic broaden the knowledge of the BNSs on the different local vegetables that can help mother’s prepare complementary food for the growing child.
The successful virtual Conference ended with the association officers’ giving the updates on membership, financial statement and activities made by the organization.
As of the first quarter of 2021, Eastern Visayas houses a total of 4,998 barangay nutrition scholars providing nutrition and health services to 4, 390 barangays in the region. #NASLabordo
