With a shared vision to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in the country, the National Nutrition Council graced the Save the Children Philippines’ 1st Save the Children Media Awards on November 25, 2015 at the PETA Theatre in Quezon City.

With this year’s theme, “Uncovering Child Hunger and Malnutrition in the Philippines,” the event is one of the key activities of Save the Children Philippines’ campaign against child hunger and malnutrition, entitled “Lahat Dapat.” This is the organization’s way of recognizing outstanding and existing audio-visual and print materials dedicated to presenting child hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines as an alarming concern intended to inspire everyone to participate in the advocacy to eradicate these conditions.

Sugar-sweetened foods and beverages like commercially available cookies, granola bars, fruit drinks, sports drinks, and soft drinks typically contain high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which is a liquid sweetener used to replace common table sugar in food manufacturing. It has been extensively used by the food industry since the 1960's because of its practicality and availability.

However, in the recent years, numerous studies showed that increased consumption of sugar-sweetened food and beverages is linked to overweight and obesity among children and adults, and to consequent development of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes. The World Health Organization (2015) said that sugar-sweetened food and beverages can increase overall energy intake and may reduce consumption of foods containing more nutritionally adequate calories which leads to unhealthy diet and weight gain.

11202602 10205457334178910 1749797042163093277 n TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 27 (PNA) - The National Nutrition Council (NNC) has recognized on Friday some local government units and individuals that contributed to the effort in lowering down the incidence of malnutrition in Eastern Visayas.

In an awarding ceremony at Patio Victoria, this city, the NNC honored three towns, one village and two local nutrition workers for their significant effort to save children from the effects of malnutrition.

Selected as recipients of 2014 Green Banner Awards are Tarangnan in Samar and Caibiran in Biliran. However, Bobon town in Northern Samar emerged as the outstanding municipality among the 136 towns in the region in terms of nutrition program implementation based on the result of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET), an inter-agency committee.

“I am grateful for this award in our town and this is adding up to the challenge. We’re not satisfied with what we have been doing in the past years for the welfare of our children,” said Bobon Mayor Reny Celespara in a phone interview.

Green Banner is given to the first ranking town in a province in the region that has been adjudged by the inter-agency regional nutrition evaluation team in recognition of efficient implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition.

Of the 4,390 villages in Eastern Visayas, Sto. Niño village in Maasin City stands out as the best Barangay Nutrition Committee in the region with zero malnutrition incidence this year and sound implementation of nutrition programs in the barangay..

The outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) award for the province was given to Lanie Ancheta of Cabunga-an village in Tarangnan, Samar and Jennifer Dejesica of Sto. Niño village in Maasin City. Dejesica is also the Regional Outstanding BNS.

“I couldn’t believe that my effort will be recognized by the government. I just did my job of ensuring that no children in our village is undernourished,” said Dejesica, 37, a mother of four.

BNS are tasked to monitor the nutritional status of the vulnerable sector in the community and deliver nutrition and other related services.

Finalists to the outstanding BNS awards are Delia Pulga of Magsaysay village in Bobon town; Midarda Longcop of Oriental 1 village in Gamay, Northern Samar; Alicia Bestudio of Malapoc Norte village in Maasin City; and Luisa Pigar of San Isidro village in Mondragon, Northern Samar.

“The awarding ceremony is a fitting tribute to the men and women, as well as local government units and local nutrition councils who stood best in the fight against hunger and malnutrition in the region,” said NNC Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Catalino Dotollo, Jr.

The NNC also recognized the participation of local government units in the monitoring and evaluation of local level planning implementation. These are the towns of Almeria, Naval, Kawayan, Maripipi, Biliran, Culaba, and Cabucgayan in Biliran; Tacloban City, Matalom, and Hilongos in Leyte.

Also recognized are Can-avid, Giporlos, Balangkayan, and Borongan City in Eastern Samar; Catbalogan City in Samar; Mondragon and Gamay, Northern Samar; Liloan, Padre Burgos, and Macrohon in Southern Leyte.

The Special Awards were given to Maasin City for the exemplary implementation of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon; Alvin Manalansan, Nutrition Officer of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for his contribution to nutrition programs, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development field office for its support to Nutrition in Emergencies training in various Local Government Units in the region. pic for the sungg web article The future shines brighter for the world’s nutrition sector as countries from different parts of the world unite for the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement Global Gathering (SUNGG) at the Milano Congressi (MiCo) in Milan, Italy, 20-23 October 2015.

55 SUN Movement Country Networks including the Philippines participated in this year’s global gathering to take stock of the lessons from the past years and chart the direction of the Movement for 2016-2020 in line with Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and its potential impact for improving nutrition.

The SUN Movement identifies ways to bring people and institutions together to better convene, mobilize, share, learn, advocate, align, and coordinate actions that contribute to ending malnutrition in all its forms.

The SUNGG is also timed to take place with the support of the 2015 EXPO Milano – an international exhibition, which promotes creativity, increases awareness, and seeks participation in the drive for sustainable food production and delivery across the globe with this year’s theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.”
