Select station personnel from the 10 new Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations gathered for the National Training on Community Radio Broadcasting held recently.

The National Training on Community Radio Broadcasting was the first of the two phases of trainings provided by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) for the 10 new radio stations. Specifically, the national training focused only on the station personnel so they can be familiar with the Nutriskwela Community Radio Network program and the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022. They were also trained on the technical aspects of operating a community radio such as skills in program design, radio news writing and anchoring and new media management. They were also taught the basic requirements in managing a community radio station and the need to abide with the Nutriskwela community radio station policy, editorial policy, and government regulations.

The training also served as a venue for the participants to learn from experienced community radio and seasoned broadcasters who graced the training such as Mr. Louie Tabing, a multi-awarded Filipino radio broadcaster and community radio advocate; Mr. Andy T. Vital who currently writes for a US-based news magazine and was a former broadcaster in DZRH; Mr. Rey Langit who is a multi-awarded tri-media practitioner and currently hosts 3 weekly public affairs television programs; Mr. Jake Maderazo, station manager of Radyo Inquirer 990 AM; Mr. Mario Garcia, a veteran in Philippine broadcast media and a former broadcaster of DZMM’s Radyo Patrol; and Mr. Francis Flores, a seasoned broadcaster of GMA DZBB’s Super Radyo Nationwide.

The National Nutrition Council was represented by Chief of Nutrition Information and Education Division Jovita B. Raval, Nutrition Officer IV Malou Enteria and Nutrition Officer II Katherine Villanueva. They also served as resource speakers and facilitators on parallel workshops.

Station Manager Bary Lugan of Radyo Katribu from Tboli, South Cotabato also shared the station’s experiences and best practices as an operating Nutriskwela Community Radio station since 2015.  In the 2nd Nutriskwela Awards held last 9 February, Radyo Katribu won two individual awards, namely: Best Writer and Best Program Manager.

On the last day of the training, the participants had the opportunity to tour around the production studios of ABS-CBN Corporation and the broadcast booth of Radyo ng Pilipinas 738 khz at  the Philippine Information Agency.

Currently, the 10 new stations are conducting their respective hands-on training as part of the second phase of trainings. Participants for the hands-on trainings are members of the station personnel (Station Manager, Program Manager, News Director, Writer, Reporter/s and Licensed Radio Technician) and members of different sectors who represent the Community Radio Council. The last day of the training includes the inauguration of the newly-established radio station which signals the official broadcast of the community radio stations.
